Safety at height: mandatory rules for working with scaffolding and platforms

Working at height always involves risk. Even if it seems like it's just a few minutes or we've done it a hundred times, falling from scaffolding or platforms is unforgiving. Safety here isn't a formality or unnecessary rules to tick. It's what truly saves lives.

The scaffolding and platforms you can buy in our store are designed to allow people to work above ground level with support underfoot. But they are only safe when assembled correctly, installed on a sturdy foundation, and used properly. The biggest danger is that a structure appears secure, which leads many to become complacent.

  1. The first step in safe work is proper installation. Scaffolding must be placed on a level, solid surface. Not on bricks, not on planks "for support," not on loose soil. If the foundation is unstable, the entire structure may warp or fall. Before starting work, always check for any looseness, play, or damaged components.
  2. It's crucial that the platform be solid and securely fastened. A person should be able to confidently step onto the platform without fear of the board shifting or cracking. Any gaps, slippery surfaces, or debris underfoot greatly increase the risk of falls.
  3. Guardrails and handrails are essential. This is one of the main reasons why people are safe when working at height. If the platform lacks sides, one awkward movement is enough for a person to fall. This is especially dangerous when a worker is carrying tools or materials and not paying attention to their feet.
  4. Do not overload the scaffold. Each structure has a permissible load. The maximum load of the Virastar Optima and Profi scaffold towers is 200 kg/m². If too many bags, tiles, or equipment are piled on the platform, the elements may not support it. Overloading often causes collapses, and these can happen suddenly.
  5. Ascent and descent are a separate issue. Climbing the frame, jumping from level to level, or using unauthorized ladders is prohibited. A dedicated ladder or access section must be provided for this purpose. Most injuries occur not during work, but during ascent or descent, when a person is in a hurry.
  6. Personal protective equipment is essential. A hard hat is needed not just to "keep your boss from scolding you." Tools, components, and even pieces of plaster often fall from scaffolding. A single blow to the head can end in tragedy. A safety harness is required where there is a risk of falling, especially at great heights or when working on exposed edges.
  7. Working at heights in bad weather is prohibited. Strong winds, rain, and icy conditions make the platform slippery and the structure less stable. Even an experienced worker can lose their balance in a second.
  8. Another important thing is discipline on the job. Don't leave tools underfoot, don't run on the platform, and don't be distracted. At height, no detail matters. Every step must be taken deliberately.

The most important thing to remember: safety rules are written in blood. They weren't created to complicate work, but because someone neglected them, with dire consequences.

Construction and scaffolding, the best prices for which are available on the manufacturer's website, will be reliable assistants, but only if they are used responsibly. Checking the structure, proper installation, fencing, reliable decking, protection, and attention to detail are not unnecessary precautions. This is what truly saves lives every day.

On our website, you can purchase scaffolding, mobile towers, and scaffolding directly from the manufacturer; this is the official online store of the Ukrainian VIRASTAR plant. Our products meet quality standards and are DSTU certified. If you decide to purchase scaffolding from us, we will provide technical data sheets and installation instructions.
