Scaffolding for facade work: what to consider before purchasing
Scaffolding for facade work: what to consider before purchasing

Facade work almost always involves heights, open spaces, wind, and heavy structural loads. That's why scaffolding isn't just a temporary support, but a fully functional safety system. Before purchasing, it's important to consider not only the price of the scaffolding but also technical details that can either save time and stress later or create problems on-site.

First and foremost, it's important to properly assess the type of facade and the nature of the work. Insulation, plastering, or painting require a stable, wide work area where the worker can move around with materials. If heavy work with stone or cladding is planned, the scaffolding must be able to withstand significantly greater loads. Cheap, lightweight structures aren't suitable here, even if the height appears small.

The second key factor is the height and geometry of the building. Scaffolding is often purchased for a single project, only to later discover that additional sections, different diagonals, or non-standard fasteners are needed. It's good when the system is modular and easily expanded without losing rigidity.

An equally important parameter is the material and quality of the metal. For façade work, steel scaffolding with an anti-corrosion coating is typically used. Galvanized steel lasts longer, especially if the structure is used outdoors in rain, snow, and extreme temperatures. Painted options are cheaper, but require careful monitoring of the coating's condition.

Special attention should be paid to the connection points. Locks, fasteners, and joints determine how quickly the structure assembles and whether it is rigid. If locks are loose, the scaffolding will begin to wobble, which is dangerous. Before purchasing, it is advisable to view a sample assembly or at least check the quality of the locks manually.

The next issue is the decking. The facade requires durable platforms with a non-slip surface. Wooden decking should be dry, free of cracks, and of a thick cross-section. Metal decking is more durable, but heavier. The main thing is that they fit tightly and do not sag under the weight of people and materials.

The safety system should also not be ignored. The presence of railings, side boards, convenient ladders to the tiers, and the ability to securely anchor to the wall are not optional extras, but a necessity. Facade scaffolding without anchoring to the building should not be used at height.

Another important aspect is compliance with standards and documentation. A reliable manufacturer always has a technical data sheet, certificates, and permissible loads. If the seller can't provide any documentation, that's cause for concern.

A few practical life hacks from installers

Installers often advise purchasing scaffolding with extra height and width for the work area. In practice, additional tasks almost always arise, and the structure has to be extended during construction.

Another proven life hack is to buy a complete set of anchors and fasteners instead of searching for them locally. Skimping on fasteners is often the cause of sway and accidents.

Before starting work, it's helpful to mark elements with paint or tags if the scaffolding is frequently transported between sites. This significantly speeds up assembly and reduces loss of parts.

Experts recommend always having several additional diagonal braces. These are a lifesaver when a building has a complex shape or when façade protrusions need to be accommodated.

Another simple but important tip: don't place scaffolding on random supports. The foundation must be level and reinforced; standard support shoes are best. Most problems with distortions start from below.

Scaffolding for façade work is an investment not only in convenience but also in safety. Before purchasing, it's important to evaluate the type of work, the load, the quality of the metal, locks, decking, and the possibility of proper anchoring. The experience of installers suggests the main rule: it's better to buy a reliable system with a reserve right away than to waste money on overhauls and take risks at height.
