Construction scaffolding for the restoration of famous objects around the world

Architectural monuments and famous buildings sometimes need restoration. The cause may be a natural disaster, such as a fire, or it may be normal time. But because people want to continue to see ancient buildings or cultural monuments, they are being restored. For this purpose, scaffolding is used, which builders and restorers climb to do their work.

What famous buildings were renovated using scaffolding?

  • London's Big Ben tower underwent restoration over the course of five years. During this time, none of the tourists could enjoy the view of the Elizabeth Tower in its original form, in which it was built in the 19th century. But now the symbol of the capital of Great Britain has been restored and the scaffolding has been removed, so anyone can admire the main clock of London.

  • At one time, the recognizable towers of Disneyland were also covered with scaffolding. To keep buildings in good condition, scheduled maintenance is needed every 15-20 years. Of course, the upper parts of the façade were repainted every 3 years, and the lower levels were painted at night when there were no visitors. But the time has come for major maintenance, for which scaffolding was needed.

  • The Parthenon of Athens was also entangled in a network of scaffolding. This ancient temple was built before our era from limestone and marble. Subsequently, it was rebuilt, destroyed and restored more than once. The surviving columns and steps make one marvel at the skill of the ancient builders. The Parthenon belongs to the world cultural heritage, so it is being restored. Scaffolding was installed on the outside of the building and inside. During the restoration, tools were discovered hidden in hiding places. It would be impossible to reach them without scaffolding. It is likely that the ancient builders also used scaffolding during the construction of the Acropolis.

  • The Colosseum in Rome was also covered with scaffolding. The ancient building was built in the 1st century AD. It was the largest amphitheater of that time, designed for 50,000 people. But centuries later, fires and earthquakes destroyed the Colosseum. The rulers periodically restored the ancient structure, but time inexorably destroyed it. At some point, the walls of the Colosseum were a source of building materials for the construction of palaces, factories and other buildings. To do this, they not only picked up fallen travertine stones and bricks, but also broke them out on purpose. The last restoration was carried out in 2013 - 2016, when the task was to clean the facade and return it to its original color.

Scaffolding erected along architectural antiquities is not recommended to be secured in the traditional way - using anchors. Some builders use support scaffolding as a method of securing the main scaffolding.
